Who we are
About Neighborhood Health Plan
Neighborhood Health Plan (NHP), that will be known as AllWays Health Partners beginning January 1, 2019, is an NCQA-accredited, not-for-profit health plan that provides coverage to commercial and MassHealth members. For more than 30 years, employers, individuals, and families across Massachusetts have turned to NHP for health care coverage that is both high-quality and affordable. NHP is known for plans that are easy-to-understand and manage. Members have access to a robust network of top doctors, community health centers, and academic and regional hospitals. Founded in 1986 with a commitment to promote health equity for members within the diverse communities we serve, NHP’s service and care management programs today continue the tradition of personalized and high-quality care. NHP is a member of Partners HealthCare.
NHP’s history is unique among health plans in the Commonwealth. In the early 1980s, through a federal grant, Boston Health Plan was formed to enroll city employees, Medicaid clients, and uninsured workers in one managed care plan.
The plan was anchored by the area’s community health centers (CHCs) and Boston City Hospital. This model formed the basis for what would become Neighborhood Health Plan. In 1986, the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers and the Greater Boston Forum for Health Action identified a new challenge: to provide better access to health care for all underserved populations. In 1986, NHP was incorporated and began its work by serving the patients of Boston Health Plan.
From modest beginnings in the Fields Corner neighborhood of Dorchester, NHP quickly embraced its role as a community member, service provider, and leader. From the beginning, NHP set out to provide the best personally-tailored care to meet the health needs of a diverse community.
NHP was one of the first health plans in the country created with the express purpose of addressing the health care needs of underserved populations.
By working closely with the MassHealth program and commercial purchasers, and by partnering with CHCs and other providers, NHP has grown from a few thousand members in the late 1980s to hundreds of thousands of members today.
Today, Neighborhood Health Plan is a member of Partners HealthCare which was founded by Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.
